The coffeetree is a native tree generally found in moist soils of valleys along with other hardwoods. Coffeetrees are large, 60-70 feet tall with leaves 12-30 inches long. The bark is gray and thick. Flowers are greenish-white and hairy. Male and female flowers bloom on separate trees in late spring. Fruit is a dark brown pod which hangs on short stalks. The roasted seeds were once used as a coffee substitute.
